Introduction. In the last decade, socio-economic issues have come to the fore in the rehabilitation of people with disabilities. They are consistent with the proclaimed development goals in the declaration adopted in the Republic of Tajikistan, the Millennium Development Goals, which correspond to indicators related to poverty and access to health services. Efforts are needed to improve the promotion of medical and social protection and rehabilitation of people with disabilities in terms of promoting training programs, employment, and infrastructure development of rehabilitation facilities. At the same time, especially in rural areas, it is necessary to create conditions for decent living for people with disabilities.
Aim. The study of the socio-economic status of people with disabilities in the Republic of Tajikistan on the example of the Sughdi region.
Materials and methods. The research materials were specially developed questionnaires consisting of questions concerning the socio-economic status of respondents and the availability of various forms of rehabilitation services in Sughdi region.
Results. The results of the study showed that in the future, when developing the infrastructure of cities and especially villages, the criteria of a “friendly environment” must be taken into account during construction.
Discussion. According to the results of the study, the main issues that the researchers focused on were labor, employment, and the household issue of nutrition. Thus, 42.5 % of respondents expressed a desire to work in cities and 51.4 % in rural areas, respectively, while most of the respondents with disabilities indicated poor nutrition due to financial difficulties. In addition, people with disabilities pointed to such problems as a small pension and poor living conditions. All of the above suggests that there is a need in the republic to review and expand the social services offered to the population, to educate and retrain people with disabilities, as well as to provide them with jobs.
Conclusion. In order to improve the quality of life of people with disabilities, it is necessary to create conditions for accessibility of a friendly environment in terms of their social, labor, and legal activity.
