Annotation:

In March 1935, by order of the director, Professor EY Osten-Sacken at the Leningrad Scientific Research Institute of Prosthetics, currently the Albrecht Federal Scientific and Educational Centre of Medical and Social Expertise and Rehabilitation, a Research and Design Bureau was established, which served as a link between the medical and technical components of a new scientific field – prosthetics. It was tasked with developing prosthetic and orthopedic products, including various kinds of upper and lower limb prostheses, working devices for people with disabilities with upper limb defects, orthopedic shoes, etc. The design bureau was the forge of the institute’s technical staff. Many of the managers and employees who worked in this department later rightfully held high positions at the Institute, namely: Director of the Leningrad Scientific Research Institute of Prosthetics, PhD in Medical Sciences, Honored Physician VA Betekhtin, Deputy Technical Directors, Grand PhD in Technical Sciences FS Vorontsov, Chief Designer VA Smirnov. The design bureau as a structural unit has been in demand for all the years of its existence, since the implementation of the ideas of developing prosthetics and prosthetics was impossible without creating experimental samples, testing them, evaluating disabled people and transferring them to production.
