Shcherbina Konstantin Konstantinovich, Doctor of Medical Sciences, Professor of the Department of Traumatology and Orthopedics, Director of the Institute of Prosthetics and Orthotics of the FSBI FNTSRI named after G.A. Albrechta of the Ministry of Labor of Russia, President of the Russian branch of the International Society for Prosthetics and Orthotics (ISPO). Author of more than 200 scientific papers, developer of new and improved methods of operative (including using microsurgical techniques) and conservative preparation for prosthetics, as well as primary, treatment-training, complex and atypical prosthetics for disabled people with amputation defects of the limbs.

With the direct participation of Shcherbina K.K. and under his leadership, comprehensive studies of rehabilitation were carried out in the aftermath of a mine-explosive injury in victims with defects in the upper and lower extremities. He stood at the origins of the organization on the basis of the clinic of the institution of a specialized center for the training, prosthetics and rehabilitation of disabled military service.

Under the leadership of Shcherbina K.K. theoretical and practical aspects of complex and atypical prosthetics for disabled people with stumps of the upper and lower extremities have been developed, and new and existing designs of prostheses have been developed and improved. For the first time in the industry, the practical implementation of this direction took place through the creation of an experimental production laboratory for complex and atypical prosthetics and orthotics for disabled people with defects in the upper and lower extremities, in which more than 1,500 patients from various regions of the country receive assistance annually.

The research results were introduced into the practice of rehabilitation institutions and prosthetic and orthopedic enterprises of the Russian Federation. In co-authorship, 9 inventions have been developed and protected by patents and copyright certificates, of which 5 lower limb prostheses, 2 of which (after interilio-abdominal amputation and hemipelvectomy) have no world analogues and are used in the practice of domestic prosthetics.

He has led a number of international studies that have enriched the theory and practice of the Paralympic Movement. A number of original special techniques and means of prosthetics for sports have been developed. As a result, the world’s first team of disabled people playing vertical hockey with prostheses was created in Russia, which served as an example for organizing such teams in other countries.

KK Shcherbina is a reviewer of the foreign journals “Journal of Rehabilitation Research and Development” (JRRD) and “Journal of Biomedical Material Research” (JBMRA), president of the Russian branch of the International Society for Prosthetics and Orthotics (ISPO), vice president of the All-Russian public organization “Guild of Prosthetics-Orthopedists”.
